Mormonism: Is It Christian?
Is Mormonism just another Christian denomination as many believe?
Do Mormon teachings line up with the Bible?
Is the Jesus of Mormonism the same Jesus that the Bible reveals to us?
Is the Mormon gospel the same gospel of Christianity?
When examining the doctrines of Mormonism and comparing them to the Bible we see that the answer is a resounding NO! Let's examine a few of the key Mormon teachings and compare them to what God's Word reveals.
Mormonism: Mormonism teaches that the Father and the Son are not only distinct
Persons, but they are also separate Beings and Separate Gods. This view of God is known as Polytheism which is a belief in or worship of many Gods.
Christian Response: The Bible clearly teaches monotheism, which is the doctrine that there is only one God. It reveals to us that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all of Divine nature and that they share a single essence of Being. There is one God or one Being Who is three persons. God is one in essence, but three in persons. That is, regarding God, there is one What, but there are three Who's. God is a triune God.
Mormonism: Mormonism teaches that God the Father inhabits a body of flesh and bones just like us and that He has many wives. Mormons believe that they were originally the result of a heavenly, sexual union.
Christian Response: Scripture clearly teaches us that the Father is a Spirit. John 4:24 says, "God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and truth." The spirit is the opposite of what is physical or material. God is not limited by the physical or by time but rather He created them. The idea of God having a wife is clearly not a Biblical concept and nowhere to be found in Scripture. This is pure fabrication on the part of Mormonism.
Mormonism: Mormons teach that God the Father (Elohim) was once a man just like we are now. He eventually became God and is therefore an exalted man. Just as the Father became God, Mormonism teaches that good Mormons can also become Gods.
Christian Response: God has always been God and has never been anything less than God. The Bible teaches that God is immutable (unchanging). "For I am the Lord, I do not change" (Malachi 3:6). The Bible nowhere teaches that we can become Gods. Rather, we will always be God's human creation made to fellowship with Him.
Mormonism: Mormonism teaches that the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price and the Doctrine and Covenants are sacred scripture along with the Bible.
Christian Response: The Bible alone is the Word of God. Mormon scriptures clearly contradict the Bible in their teachings proving that they are not from God. The Book of Revelation gives a stern warning, "If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from these things that are written in this book" (Rev. 22:18, 19).
Mormonism: teaches that Jesus was born in the heavens when the "Heavenly Father" named Elohim had sexual relations with one of His spirit wives. It also teaches that Satan is the spirit brother of Jesus.
Christian Response: The Bible teaches that Jesus was not created, but is an eternal Being who has always been God. Jesus, as God, had no beginning (John 1:1-3; Titus 2:13). Lucifer was a creation of God and not the spirit brother of Jesus. Sin found its origin in Lucifer when through his own free will he chose to rebel against the Creator. Consequently, Lucifer was banished from having his residence in heaven as he then became perverted and corrupt. His name was then changed from "Lucifer" to "Satan" which means "adversary" (Isa 14:12-17).
Mormonism: Mormonism teaches that the Heavenly Father "Elohim" came to earth in human form and had sexual relations with the Virgin Mary.
Christian Response: Scripture teaches that Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit. Bible scholars have never interpreted this as a sexual act.
Mormonism: Mormonism teaches that "there is no salvation outside of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (Mormon Doctrine, p. 670)
Christian response: Salvation has nothing to do with joining an organization or a particular church or denomination. Salvation takes place when a person places their trust in the true Biblical Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. These born again believers are the ones who are part of God's church and will experience eternal life.
It is clear that Mormonism preaches a different gospel along with a different Jesus. Only the true Biblical Jesus can save a person from an eternity in hell and redeem his or her soul. If a person is trusting in the Mormon Jesus, then he is lost and will perish in his sins unless he repents and turns to the real Jesus as revealed in scripture.
