Witnessing Survey II (Excerpts from The Way of the Master)
Pardon me, my name is ______ and I am doing a brief survey. Can you take a just a few minutes?
First of all, I want to ask you if you believe in heaven? (Pause for answer)
Secondly, how do you hope to get there?
In other words, if you were to die tonight and God were to ask you, “Why should I let you into my heaven. How would you answer Him? What would qualify you to get in?
(Usually the person will state that they will get in because they are a good person or because they keep the God’s commandments)
Do you mind if I ask you a few brief questions to help us determine if you really are a good person?
Have you ever told a lie? Usually they will respond with a yes. What do you call a person that tells lies? Answer: A liar.
Have you ever stolen something? Regardless of its value. Could be something as small as a pencil or an eraser. If yes; Then what do you call a person who steals things?
Answer: A thief.
Have you ever taken God’s name in vain? You know like a curse word where you rake God’s name through the mud. If yes; that’s called blasphemy and it is an offense against a Holy God.
Have you ever looked upon another person and lusted after them even if only in your thoughts?
Jesus said, “But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart”
(Matt. 5:28).
So by admission we can see that you are a lying, thieving, blaspheming, adulterer at heart. And we’ve only just covered 4 of the 10 commandments.
Given God’s perfect standard of righteousness, when you stand before God on judgment day, will you be innocent or guilty? Answer: Guilty
Will you be in heaven or hell? Answer: Hell
Does that concern you? It concerns me too and that is why I am sharing this with you. Because I don’t want to see you go to hell and receive the eternal wrath of God.
However, God did provide a solution for your sin problem and a way for you to be saved from His judgment. Do you know what that is?
Answer: Because of God's loving mercy and kindness toward you, this is what He did: “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
Jesus Christ, who is God, took on human flesh as he was born of the Virgin Mary. He lived a perfect, sinless and righteous life, thereby fulfilling the requirements of God’s Holy Law. He then went to the cross and died as he bore the punishment for your sins for you in your place. Three days later he bodily resurrected from the dead and he has ascended to the right hand of the Father. Jesus is coming back again to judge the living and dead. And he will separate the sheep from the goats. Those that have repented of their sin and placed their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ will be with him forever in heaven. Those that do not turn to Him and place their trust in Christ, will die in their sins and will be cast into the lake of fire where they will receive their just reward of eternal punishment.
Jesus commands us to “Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15).
Do you know what it means to repent? It means to change your mind and be willing to turn away from all sin, to forsake it and to let go of it. And then to turn to Jesus Christ and place your complete faith and trust in him to save you from the judgment to come and to give you the free gift of eternal life.
God calls you to stop trusting in your own works or anything that you can do to try to earn or merit eternal life and to trust only in Jesus Christ and his shed blood on the cross to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. The Bible says “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Eph. 2: 8, 9).
It is my hope and prayer that you will consider this matter carefully as the eternal destiny of your very soul is dependent on whether or not you receive Jesus Christ.
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Rom. 10:9).
If it is the desire of your heart to place your trust in Christ, I encourage you to get alone with God when you go home tonight and go to Him in prayer and call on Jesus to save you. Or if you would like receive Him right now, I can help lead you in a prayer as you place your trust in Christ.
Whatever the person’s decision, our trust is in the power of God’s Word to do the work of conversion in the person’s heart and bring about the new birth through spiritual regeneration.
